Poker Through the Eyes of an Amateur

I Can't Think Of A Good Title So I'll Just Make An Obnoxiously Long One And There's Nothing You Can Do About It

I've been doing alright at the tables recently, though I haven't been playing as much as I used to. I made two buy-ins at $100 NL, which was nice. I really shouldn't be playing at that limit, as it's horrible bankroll management, but I don't really care that much about it anymore. In face, my apathetic attitude towards the money being risked has actually helped me play better. I just need to not get kicked in the nuts, I guess. I give myself two weeks.

I played in the Mookie last week, but I didn't make it this week. This Wednesday I ended up working a really late day at work, and I just wasn't up to playing when I got home. We will see if I can make it next week. Last week was pretty fun. There's not a whole lot to relate about it, though. The only "interesting" hand was the hand I busted on. I got it all in with AA against one of the Wonkas' (I forget which one) JJ. Jack on the flop, and I go home. It didn't even phase me a bit. Apathy is a nice attribute to have for certain activities, it seems.

I plan to play a bit this weekend. We don't really have any big plans, so I will most likely be playing some poker and watching some football. Sounds like a good time to me, especially since my wife likes watching football too. Yes, you read that right. I'm pretty much one of the luckiest guys out there. I'm married to a woman who arguably likes college football more than I do. How awesome is that?

In non-poker news, I have finally come to the very reluctant conclusion that if I'm ever going to get back into shape, I'm going to have to get up early every morning, as this is pretty much the only time I will be able to work out. I started today by lifting weights, which I haven't done in forever. I'm not in much pain now, but I know that tomorrow is going to be killer. Sunday will probably be even worse. The plan is to lift weights three times a week and run three times a week. Sundays will be the day off. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that doing this for a few months will get me back below 200 lbs (currently ~210 lbs) and closer to where I was in college. Let's just hope I can stay motivated.

I hope the rest of you are doing well. If you're playing on Saturday afternoon, look me up. I will most likely be on FTP. See you on the felt!

Poker Semi-Break

I've been on a kind of semi-break from poker for the past few weeks. There are a few reasons for this. The first is that I just wanted to take a break. It had been a while since I stepped away, and it's good to do that every once in a while. It allows you to clear your head and come back focused. The second, and probably the biggest, reason is that I recently upgraded the video card and memory in my PC.

That's right, I've been back playing video games. I dropped in another gigabyte of memory, bringing the total to two, as well as this bad boy. Unless you're a hardware enthusiast, that link probably won't mean much to you. Suffice it to say that it is a big step up from my last card. I've been sucked back into Oblivion, progressing a lot further than I did the last time I played it.

I haven't been completely absent from the tables, though. Full Tilt gave me a $50 bonus, so I've been working off and on the past few days on clearing that. I've gotten about $10 of it, but I really don't care if I don't get the whole $50. It's just a little incentive for when I'm playing at the cash game tables. I also played in the 7PM $10NL tournament the other day that I love so much. I was doing incredibly well until I got coolered and then kicked in the nuts to bust me out.

I had doubled my starting stack pretty early, when I raised it up with pocket 6s from mid-late position. I had been pretty tight and decided to switch gears. I got two callers. The flop was 68T with two of a suit. I lead out because slowplaying sets is dumb. One guy calls, and another guy raises. I had one covered and the other had me covered. Based on pot size, I decided to push it right here. Both players called. The guy that had me covered had AT (well done there), and the other guy had flopped the double gutshot with 79s. Ugh. So the one guy tripled up, and I won a side pot that brought me back down to starting stack size.

A little later I get pocket tens and raise it up from MP. I get one caller from the button. The flop came Qxx, and I lead out. The other guy moved all in. That just screamed "I have nothing" to me, so I called. He flips AJ. I turn another ten. Sweet! He rivers a king. I puke. IGHN. Normally that would bother me just a little, but I just don't care anymore. I either win or I lose. Whatever.

Anyway, I will probably still not be playing as much for a while, for the same two reasons I mentioned above. I will play off and on, but I definitely won't be playing daily. Maybe I will make it to the Mookie at some point in the near future. I know I've said that like three times and haven't shown up, but I keep forgetting. Hopefully my mind will remember it this time. (Don't count on it.)
